Tattoos on Pigs: A Work of Art or Sick Artist’s Imagination?

” We make money not art”. It is a logo of Wim Delvoye - a Belgian conceptual artist, who thinks that Art doesn’t bring any practical use. That’s why he decided to create unusual works of art, and earn money by selling them. I should say that Wim has rather unconventional imagination and utalitarial perception of art and its function. Drawing tattoos on pigs - is one of his popular projects. He has such a called “Art-Farm” in the suburbs of Beijing with a whole army of farmers, breeding pigs, and painters, drawing tattoos on pigs’ backs. Now Wim has 18 pigs on his Art Farm and 3 artists. Every pig has its own name and the works of art on their backs have the same titles.
The tattoos, which you can see on pigs’ skin reflect the heroes from Disney movies, symbols from Chinese legends and Louis Vuitton designs. Of course, he also draws his own pictures on pigs’ backs and is famous for doing it very quickly.
When a pig becomes mature, it means that time for it to be tattooed has come. To tattoo a pig it’s necessary to sedate it, shave and apply Vaseline to its skin. After the death of such an object of art, pig’s skin turnes into a real masterpiece, which can decorate your house. The dead pigs are skinned and the pictures from their backs in future will be represented on the canvas.
Those, who desire to possess such a work of art, don’t need to buy an alive pig, they can just obtain pig’s skin, which is sold at auction and evaluated rather high. The price for such original sample of modern art is nearly 150.000$. This may strike and even shock you, but there are people who buy these painted skins and feel very proud of them, hanging them on the walls in their bedrooms. The results of Wim’s work are usually exhibited in Art Galleries. An extraordinary artist prefers to show the tattoos, using his alive art objects. The collectors choose the work of art they like most of all and buy it.Many people think it’s a kind of violence to use pigs in this way. But Wim considers, that he saves Chinese pigs from butchers.

this is Susan
you can really see all the layers that she has on this one.
i love the feeling of this one. I feel like the woman is really trapped in the sky.
this one just really pops and it is amazing!!!! one of my new favorites.

i am now in love with Susan Seddon Boulet!! i spent a very long time looking at her book in the art room and read about her. all of her things are about moon Gods and she paints them the way that she seas them. They are very well done i love the way she makes them pop out of the work and how detailed it is. She is alot like Jesse because when i was reading about her she said that when she does not like something she covers it up and leaves the parts that are working. So she has many things going on all at once and so it really makes you want to look at her stuff more. I could look at it for much longer than i did. But i had to get lunch so i stopped. You should look more into her. She does some really sick stuff.

Concentration pieces 2 and 3

The main theme of my concentration is death. I have come up with twelve different ways to die. I will portray these types of death in my work. I have ideas in my head that I want others to see through my work. I do not like death, but don't want people to be scared of it. If I paint things that people made be scared of at first glance, later on they may not be as scared because they have become use to seeing them. I also find it interesting to see different peoples reactions to scarey images made by a teenage girl.

For example the two works here focus on death in the following ways: Temptation and starvation.

Using strong line and value I drew skulls. Instead of using just one skull I chose to use several to focus on how death effects us all. Starvation is one way to die. Animals frequently die of starvation with their bodies left to rot and give back to the earth. I drew these skulls in the art room from observation. The lights created shadows that further exploited the concept of death.

Temptation, the image to the left is an example of another way to die. Falling into temptation, any kind of temptation, can lead to many negative effects. These pieces is drawn with colored pencil. I enhanced the lights and dark's which made it look more stylized so that the viewer could focus on the important aspects of the piece. I found this image in a magazine but it was very different. She was breastfeeding a child, while measuring gold. I was able to take her facial expressions and make it a completely different story. Shape played an important role in creating this composition.

ok so last class i had alot of extra time so i made a doll thing. i think i want to make more of them and create like a tribe. they look alot like indians and they do not have arms or legs but i could give them some and mix it up. If andy one has anything that they dont want laying around that is kinda indian that could fit on a doll bring it and i would love to use it. i really like him and would have a picture of him but no one in my family has a working camera and the cord to one of them does not work so i cant. I wrap then with string and then add colored string to add to it and i found broken bracelets and stuff like that. He also has feathers which are fun and beads. I had alot of fun making them and so when i need that break from an overload of painting work then i think that is what im going to do.
